Waffle Lady

The Table

Hi Everyone,

During this holiday season and just after finishing a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner which I served outside on our new deck -  on our Ping Pong Table - I am reminded about how important the Table is in our family.

I like to have eye contact with everyone sitting at the Table and I want to have the Grandchildren involved in the conversation.  The Ping Pong Table was the answer!   It took three table cloths to accomplish this feat.

When I was raising my family of six children we always loved sharing our meals at the family booth.  Twice a day "The Booth"  became the gathering place in our home.  The first Apple II E computer was placed right in the kitchen next to the booth.  All projects and homework were done at the booth.  So many amazing & wonderful memories happened at our booth.  Laughter, jokes,  new ideas, serious conversations . . .all sorts of family communication.  It was magical.

Then came electronics - Cell Phones-Game Boy-Big Screen TV's-Lap top's-XBox-Wii.  I became jealous of these THINGS that interfered with my special moments at my table.  I  had worked so hard to create great food for them-how could they become so distracted?

After the large Waffle Lady Restaurant was sold I took my waffle dollars and treated my entire family to a trip to Maui.  The rules were:
     1.   No Computers
      2.  No Cell Phones
      3.  No Business Conversations
      4.  One meal paid for by me at Longhi's or Kimo's daily.  Just show up.

Well, we had the best time of our lives.  We talked, laughed and loved each other for seven glorious days.  I believe it all started at the table  when they were young.

I noticed at Thanksgiving there were no electronics at our Ping Pong Table.  I didn't even have to ask for the Things to be left behind.  Everyone wanted to talk & laugh.   We all enjoyed ourselves just like in the "Olden Days".

The Waffle Lady's Finest Moment

You all know how God works.  He works in "mysterious ways, His wonders to perform".  Not too long ago I, before I sold the Waffle Lady Restaurant to Bad to the Bone-BBQ I was in the Restaurant on a sunday morning when the most wonderful man from Uganda, Africa was introduced to me by a regular customer & his son.
We all started talking about an orphanage in Uganda where the children & staff plant, grow & eat organic foods.  I was fascinated by this & suggested he take some Waffle & Pancake Mix, as well as some Jumbleberry & Coconut~Vanilla Bean Syrup back to his country.
I really thought he might have some trouble getting my products into another country, but to my amazement I received the following e-mail & the most wonderful pictures from the children.  When I read the e-mail I started crying, called Brent & said I had something wonderful to share with him.  I drove to meet him for breakfast and he cried too.  He said, "Well, Jeanne, it doesn't get better than this!
I am attaching this e-mail to share with all of you.

Dear "waffle Lady"/Jeanne,
Greeting from this side of the world!!!
I hope you still remember me?  I am sorry that it took me all this long to get back to you.
I am James Mutaka Kroll from Uganda.  On 9th March 2008, a friend of mine called Steven Earnshaw brought me into your restaurant for breakfast and I happened to meet you.  I had a wonderful taste of Waffles that day.

Furthermore, you donated to us/me the waffle mix.  I waited for most of our kids to be back from school.  This week as we ended the school break in style, by having waffle for breakfast.  It was so amazing and the memory came back to me.  I remember how warmly and loving you were.  Thanks for your hospitality and genuine heart.  I told the project children how we met, read your story them and they were touched amidst increasing food prices.

One of the kid jokingly said that we now taste "Mzungu" (white people) food from all the way from "California".  Another one said I will tell my family and friends how the food tastes.

Anyhow, simple sacrifice and sharing heart can mean a lot.  As I was eating the Pan cake by Sarah, then I thought about Jesus Fedding the 5,000.  The little we give touches many souls and makes us appreciate life.

We will keep in touch and thanks again.
Enjoy the photos of the last California Waffle mix.
May God Bless you abundantly,
Love,
James Mutaka Kroll,
